How do I track a training course from the first video to the final report?

Short answer

Identify each learner before they watch, put the course videos in one playlist or group, and use the same identity on every video. Then export a Completion report for those videos to get one row per learner, with a score for each video.

How to do it

1. Choose one learner identity for the whole course: an email address or a custom ID, such as an employee number.
2. Collect it on every video. Use Lead Capture at the start of each video, a personalized link, or add ?email= or ?custom_id= to each link. In an LMS, a SCORM package passes the LMS learner ID for you.
3. Put the course videos in one playlist (Playlists in the side menu) or one group. In the playlist settings, turn on Show learner progress if learners watch from the playlist page.
4. On each video, set up the rules that define completion: required questions, no seeking, and correct answers. See stop learners skipping ahead.
5. Test with one learner and at least two videos (see the test below).
6. To report, go to Reporting > Views, filter by the playlist or group, select Export, and choose Completion report. Set Group participants by to the identity you chose.

Test before launch

• Open the first video in a private browser window with [email protected] at the end of the link. Answer the questions, one of them wrong, and watch to the end.
• Open the second video the same way, with the same email. Watch part of it, then close the tab.
• Go to Reporting > Viewers and open the test learner. Expected result: one viewer with two views, one for each video, with the watched percentage and score for each.
• Export a Completion report for both videos, grouped by Email. Expected result: one row for the test learner, with a score column for each video.
• Export again with Only include viewers that have completed all videos on. The learner still shows if both views have ended. Use Raw views to check the watched percentage.

Where to watch progress

• Reporting > Viewers: every view by one learner, across all videos.
• Reporting > Questions: the answers to each question, across learners.
• The playlist page, if Show learner progress is on: completed, in progress and not started, for the learner on that device.

What a report cannot combine for you

• Anonymous views. Without an email or custom ID, the same person on two devices, or in two browsers, shows as two viewers. Mindstamp cannot join them later.
• Different identities. If a learner uses a work email on one video and a personal email on another, the reports show two people.
• Watched percentage and score in one row. The completion report shows scores per video. Raw views show watched percentage per view. Join the two files in a spreadsheet if you need both.
• Playlist progress across devices. The playlist page keeps progress in the browser, so a learner who changes device sees no progress there. Reports still show every identified view.
• Separate training cycles. Reports keep all views. For a yearly refresher, filter the export by date range, or put the new cycle in a new playlist or group.
