Use interactive video when a video has to do more than play: check that a viewer understood, show each viewer the part that fits them, or turn a view into a lead, a booking, or a sale. A regular video reports plays and watch time. An interactive video asks questions and offers choices, and it records each answer and click against the viewer who made it, so you can see who understood and who acted. That record is the business case. In the 28-second demo below, choose Exit A, Exit B, or the lift, and the video jumps to the scene for your choice.
What interactive video adds to a regular video
An interactive video is a regular video with clickable elements on its timeline: questions, buttons, hotspots, branches, and forms. Our guide to what interactive video is covers the definition and the main types. For a business decision, the difference is in what you can find out and what the viewer can do without leaving the player.
| What you need to know | Regular video | Interactive video |
|---|---|---|
| Did the viewer understand? | No answer in the video data | A score from questions inside the video, for each viewer |
| What does this viewer need? | Everyone sees the same video | The viewer picks a path, or an answer sends them to one |
| Did the viewer act? | Only if you track clicks on the page around the player | Clicks, form entries, and bookings inside the player |
| Who watched? | Play counts and watch time | Named viewers, when you collect a name or use a personalized link |
Viewers need no account, app, or plugin. The video plays in the browser from a share link or an embed on your site, LMS, or landing page (viewer access).
Why teams use interactive video
Each team buys interactive video for a different result. The sections below cover the main jobs, with a published customer story where we have one.
Training: check understanding while the video plays
A learning management system can show that a learner reached the end of a video. It cannot show that the learner understood it. Questions inside the video close that gap, and the research on testing supports them. In a 2013 Harvard study published in PNAS, students watched a 21-minute recorded statistics lecture in four segments. Students who took a short test after each segment reported mind wandering at 19% of attention checks, against 39% for students who restudied and 41% for students tested only after the last segment. The tested group also scored 90% on the final cumulative test, against 76% and 68%. An earlier study by Roediger and Karpicke (2006) found that students who took recall tests on a passage remembered more of it two days or a week later than students who reread it, although rereading made them feel more confident.
In Mindstamp, a question pauses the video at the moment a concept is taught. A wrong answer can send the learner back to the explanation, or ask again with Repeat Until Correct (scores and retries). The report shows each learner's answers and score, and a SCORM 1.2 or SCORM 2004 package sends completion and a score to your LMS (SCORM export, on supported plans). ASTM International, which develops technical standards, adds questions and choices to its training videos so learners work through standards and procedures. Athena Huss, its manager for on-demand solutions, says the team ties each interaction to an educational need (ASTM case study). For the full training case, read the benefits of interactive video for training or see interactive training video.
Marketing: capture the lead while the viewer is still watching
Most marketers still judge video by views. In Wyzowl's 2026 survey of 266 marketers and consumers, run in late 2025, 67% of video marketers measured return on investment through views and 52% through leads or clicks. A view count does not tell you who is interested. An interactive video can ask for contact details at a set time and hold playback until the viewer answers (lead capture). It can also ask a few questions and recommend a product from the answers, as this skin care product quiz does, with a Shop Now button beside the product it recommends.
Tyson Zahner used a branching marketing video that asks each viewer about their needs, then sends them to a matching offer, which helped Zahner sort leads by what they said they needed (Tyson Zahner case study). Zahner's advice to new users is to start with a simple video and learn which message works before you build many paths. More marketing uses are on our marketing page and in our post on making marketing videos interactive.
Sales: learn what each buyer cares about before the call
A recorded sales video usually goes to every prospect in the same form. With interactions, the video asks the questions a rep would ask on a first call, and the report shows each prospect's answers before anyone picks up the phone (discovery questions). A personalized link can greet the prospect by name with a placeholder such as {{NAME|there}} (personalization), and a Calendly or HubSpot calendar can open inside the video when the buyer is ready to talk (calendar embedding). See interactive sales video for the full set.
Customer support: answer the common question once, on video
A help article cannot ask the customer which error they see. A support video can open with that question and play only the branch that fixes it, as the router setup troubleshooter shows, with a link to the right setting at the step that needs it. The report then shows the step where customers stop, which points to the instruction that needs a rewrite (interactive support video).
Diamond Scheduler, which makes sports scheduling software, added buttons that link to its documentation and short quizzes after the major sections of its tutorial videos. Users spent 35% more time on average on the interactive tutorials than on the old static ones. Support tickets from customers who watched the videos fell compared with the year before, and support staff could see which tutorials a customer had already watched (Diamond Scheduler case study).
Launches and events: let the audience choose the tour
HP Indonesia launched its OMEN 16 and Victus gaming lines during a pandemic lockdown with a choose-your-own-path video. Viewers picked their route through the product story with buttons and answered multiple-choice quizzes about the products, and the format gave HP data on content performance and viewer activity (HP Indonesia case study). For more formats like this one, see our interactive video examples.
Any team: keep one video useful for longer
Interactions sit on top of the footage, so you can change a button, a price, or a policy note without a new edit, and the share link and embed code stay the same. Our guide to future-proofing video content covers what to move out of the footage and when a reshoot is still needed.
What the evidence shows, and its limits
The strongest research supports questions inside learning videos. The studies above measured attention and recall after testing. They did not measure sales or sign-ups, so do not use them to predict a marketing result.
Our own platform data shows how viewers use interactions. Across 8.07 million views of 18,315 Mindstamp videos (2018 to October 2026), 85% of views happened on videos where viewers took at least one action. Videos where viewers took more than three actions per view averaged 51.8% watched, compared with 43.9% for videos where viewers took no action. Many factors differ between these videos, so treat this as a pattern, not proof that interactions raise watch time.
The same Wyzowl survey is a useful check on expectations. Only 31% of video marketers used interactive video, and 20% said it was effective for them, which put it among the least used and least rated channels in the survey. Interactive video does not find you an audience. Judge it on the answers, choices, and actions it records from the audience you already have. If a statistic about interactive video names no study, sample, or date, leave it out of your business case.
When a regular video is enough
- The video's only job is reach on YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram. A file you upload to those apps plays without your interactions. Share the interactive version as a link or an embed on your own page instead (sharing and mobile checks).
- Nothing in the video needs an answer or a choice. A short brand film that asks nothing of the viewer gains little from a button that interrupts it.
- Nobody will use the data. If no one reads the report or follows up the leads, interactions add build time and no result.
- The event is live. Mindstamp works on recorded video, so use your streaming platform's polls and chat during the event, then add interactions to the replay.
How to test the case on one video
- Pick one video with a clear job: a training module that ends in a quiz, a product video that should bring demo requests, or a support video for your most common ticket.
- Write down the number you want to change and its value today, such as the quiz pass rate, demo requests per month, or tickets on that topic.
- Add a question or choice at the moment that matters, and a button or form where the video makes its case. Our step-by-step guide covers the build, and our best practices cover placement.
- Share it where the current video lives, and identify viewers with lead capture, a personalized link, or your LMS.
- After a few weeks, compare the report with your starting number. The interactive video ROI calculator turns that result into a yearly value for a budget discussion, and the training ROI calculator does the same for learner time.
Common questions
Is interactive video worth it?
It is worth it when you need to know whether viewers understood, what each one chose, or who acted, and when someone will use that data. Training, sales, and support videos usually meet that test. A video made only for reach on social apps usually does not, because the interactions do not travel with the uploaded file.
Is interactive video still relevant in 2026?
Yes, for the jobs above. In Wyzowl's 2026 survey, 31% of video marketers used interactive video, and training, sales, and support teams use it outside marketing as well. For the wider changes in business video this year, read our video trends for 2026.
Does interactive video increase engagement?
For learning, controlled studies show that short tests during a recorded lecture reduce mind wandering and improve recall. For other goals, rely on your own results. Diamond Scheduler reported 35% more time on its interactive tutorials, and our platform data shows a higher average watch rate on videos where viewers took more than three actions per view, but neither proves the same lift for your video.
Can I make a video I already have interactive?
Yes. Mindstamp adds interactions on top of a finished video that you upload or link from a host such as Vimeo or Wistia. The footage is not re-encoded or edited (how editing works).
How much does interactive video cost?
Mindstamp plans are priced by the number of videos, editor seats, and minutes watched each month, with unlimited viewers. See pricing for current plans. The free trial lasts 14 days and needs no payment card.
Pick the one video in your library where you most need to know who understood or who acted, and run the five steps above on it first.
