Case Study: How ASTM International Uses Mindstamp to Maximize Training Through Interactive Video
As the Manager for OnDemand Solutions at ASTM International, Athena Huss knows that you have to adapt your learning & development content to the ever-changing needs of modern viewers.
After all, ASTM has been spearheading safety and quality standards globally for over 125 years - think about how much has changed in that time!
"Interactivity is important to make sure people are engaged."
This case study explores how ASTM uses Mindstamp to break the fourth dimensional barrier between viewer and video, and to maximize content retention with cutting edge strategies.
The Challenge
According to Athena, some ASTM standards can become pretty technical at times, causing people to have trouble implementing them effectively.
On top of that, there are a lot of organizations and learners who have difficulty finding time away from their job responsibilities for training.
The Solution
Mindstamp's Interactive Video solution provided a user-friendly, approachable way to turn otherwise static learning content into enriched, asynchronous, interactive lessons.
"We develop elearning, live training, to bring those standards to life, make them interactive, and help people use them."
It's not all about making content "pop" either - interactivity is a powerful utility that meets learners where they're at and ensures comprehension in mission-critical environments like those that ASTM deals with.
"...and so we really look at interactivity as not just putting flash in, but making sure there's an intention, and that intention is tied to the educational needs, and that has been great with Mindstamp."
Q&A with Athena
Question: How has your experience been inside the editor?
Athena: “...we actually had our intern working in (Mindstamp) this summer and she had no problem. Never touched it before, brand new to elearning, and she was able to pick it up. So I think it's simple to use.
I think the biggest thing that made me want to do this for you guys was customer service with you guys has been amazing. Anytime I have a question, however dumb, where the answer is right in front of me, somebody is there to answer it within like half a day.
And then with this last project, we actually had some ideas for things that could be better and could have made our product better, and your team actually implemented the changes into the software, which was very unexpected and really appreciated.”
Athena's Advice to New Users:
"Yeah, so I would say if I were on the fence, and I was for a while, I looked at it for probably a couple of months before we reached out - do the free trial. That's really what brought it home for me, how useful it would be.
If you are an organization with a lot of video content, I think like we are, it's so good to be able to bring sort of a fresh approach to that content. You can reuse a lot, you can make more, but it really helps bring that interactivity to the next level.
You got a lot of videos right where you tune out 20 seconds in. I do that on YouTube all the time. But when somebody has something to click and something's popping up for them, there's additional branches to go down. You get more use out of something you might already have.
So, yeah, I would say give it a try. It was a really simple process, not a ton of emails or anything like that once we started. That's where I would start."
Conclusion
By leveraging the power of interactive video using Mindstamp, ASTM is able to stay on top of their e-learning and development content, and make standards and procedures easier to digest for the millions that get qualified.
