# What do viewers see when they ask Genie AI a question?

Topic: [Interactions and logic](https://mindstamp.com/help/interactions) · Updated: 2026-10-12

## Short answer

When a viewer opens Genie, the video pauses and a panel titled **Ask about this video** opens. The viewer types a question or picks a suggested one. Genie answers from the transcript and your notes, shows the times in the video that support the answer, and gives a set reply when the video does not cover the question.

## Steps

1. Open the video’s share link in a private browser window and play it.
2. Select the Genie button in the player controls, or an interaction with the **Open Genie AI** click action. The video pauses.
3. Select a suggested question, or type your own and press Enter.
4. Read the answer. Under **Where this comes from**, select a time to jump to that point in the video.
5. Ask a question that the video does not cover, and check the reply.
6. Close the panel with its close button or the Escape key. The video plays again.

## Suggested questions

If you add no questions of your own, Genie suggests three: **What is this video about?**, **Summarize the main points** and **What should I remember?** Viewers see them in their own language.

To use your own, enter them under **Suggested questions** on the **Genie AI** tab, one per line. When you translate the video, your questions are translated too. To hide suggestions, turn off **Show suggested questions**.

## Answers and source times

- Genie answers only from the transcript and the **Supplemental Info** you add. Answers are short.
- When the answer comes from the transcript, Genie lists the matching times under **Where this comes from**. The first four show, and a plus button shows the rest. Selecting a time closes Genie and plays the video from that point.
- Source times show only when viewers can seek: **Show Seekbar** and **Allow Seeking** on, and **Hide All Controls** off, in the **Player** section of **Design**.
- Each answer has a **Copy** button. An email address in an answer is a link.

## When Genie cannot answer

If the transcript and your notes do not hold the answer, Genie replies **I’m sorry I don’t know.** in the viewer’s language. To send your own reply, such as where to get help, enter it under **Response when Genie cannot answer** on the **Genie AI** tab. Viewers see your reply as you wrote it.

If Genie cannot reach the AI service, the viewer sees **Could not get an answer. Try again.** with a **Retry** button.

## The conversation

Genie keeps the conversation while the viewer stays on the same video, so closing and opening the panel shows the earlier answers. Viewers type their questions. Genie has no voice input, but it can read its answers aloud when **Speak Genie answers aloud** is on.
