# How do I set up the Magic Menu?

Topic: [Interactions and logic](https://mindstamp.com/help/interactions) · Updated: 2026-10-12

## Short answer

Open the video and select **Magic Menu** in the video menu. Add buttons, hotspots, text or images, then select **Design** to set the layout and the **Pause for Menu**, **Show on Pause** and **Show Magic Menu Icon** options. Viewers open the menu from an icon on the left edge of the player, or from any interaction with the **Open Magic Menu** click action.

## Steps

1. Open the video and select **Magic Menu** in the video menu.
2. Add items with **Button**, **Hotspot**, **Text** or **Image**. Give each one a click action, such as **Change Time** to jump to a section or **Open Link** for a resource.
3. Select **Design** to open **Magic Menu Design**. Set the layout, **Background**, **Background image** and **Transition**.
4. Turn **Pause for Menu**, **Show on Pause** and **Show Magic Menu Icon** on or off.
5. Optional: give a button or hotspot on the timeline the **Open Magic Menu** click action, so viewers can open the menu at a set moment.
6. Preview the video, open the menu, and select each item.

## Magic Menu Design options

- **Pause for Menu**: the video pauses when a viewer opens the menu. When it is off, the video keeps playing under the menu.
- **Show on Pause**: the menu opens when a viewer pauses the video, unless another panel is already open.
- **Show Magic Menu Icon**: shows the menu icon on the left edge of the player. You can choose a different icon.
- **Copy from**: **End Menu** or **Questions** copies the layout and background color of your end screen or question panel.

## What viewers see

- The icon shows after the video starts, only while the player controls show, and only when the menu has at least one item. The controls hide about 2.5 seconds after the viewer stops moving the mouse, and the icon hides with them.
- The close button closes the menu and plays the video.
- An item with **Continue**, **Change Time**, **Switch Video**, **Switch to Previous Video** or **Show Card** closes the menu when a viewer selects it.

## Copy a menu from another video

Select **Copy from…** at the top of the Magic Menu page and choose a video. The other video’s menu items and design replace the ones on this video.
